Biography

ARMAN (1928–2005) “I specialize in... everything,” declared the French-American artist in 1968. Considered one of the most inventive creators of the 20th century, Arman profoundly transformed the art world by appropriating everyday objects to create his famous “Accumulations,” inclusions, cut-ups, and also his celebrated “Colères” (destructions of objects).

Born Armand Fernandez in Nice in 1928, Arman became familiar with objects from an early age through his father’s antiques shop. A close friend of Yves Klein, with whom he shared an innovative vision of art, Arman drew inspiration from Dada and would later exert a strong influence on Pop Art. From the early 1960s onward, after adopting the name ARMAN following a printing error on an exhibition invitation, he began exhibiting in New York and experimenting with new industrial materials.

He notably used polyester resin and plexiglass to preserve and transform objects such as violins, paint tubes, and clocks, while also developing techniques such as “Combustions.” With his rapid rise to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, Arman multiplied exhibitions between the United States and Europe. He also created impressive monumental public works, including commissions for Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris (L’Heure de tous), the Élysée Palace, and Lincoln Center in New York. Today, his works are held in some of the world’s most prestigious museum collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
