With
Chupa Chups Pink, Arman seizes a resolutely pop object: the mass-produced lollipop, an icon of childhood and a symbol of consumer society, and transforms it into an accumulation frozen within a block of polyester resin. Dozens of Chupa Chups lollipops in green and multicoloured hues are layered tightly together, transforming the banal into the fascinating, the perishable into the permanent.
Created in 2000 and produced in an edition of 50, the work is signed and numbered on a metal plate embedded within the inclusion. It is listed in the Denyse Durand-Ruel archives.
At 40 × 25 × 6 cm, it is a compact, luminous, and striking piece.
This work perfectly illustrates Arman's ability, as co-founder of Nouveau Réalisme, to transform the most ordinary object into an artistic question: what gives something its value : its rarity, its repetition, or the gaze we place upon it?
