Togo is an exceptionally rare work in Arman's output: a sculpture-furniture piece, simultaneously a fully functional coffee table and a complete artwork in its own right. An accumulation of polychrome glass varnish bottles is arranged within a plexiglass enclosure, topped by a thick glass surface painted with drips and flows of colour — a gesture that echoes the Allures d'objets and the coloured imprints that run throughout Arman's entire body of work.
Created in 1997, the piece bears the artist's handwritten signature along the edge of the painted surface, with a countersigned certificate label affixed beneath the tabletop, carrying the edition number. The work is listed in the archives of the Studio Arman in New York and in the archives of Madame Denyse Durand-Ruel.
Resting on four square-section chrome steel legs, Table Togo perfectly embodies Arman's philosophy as co-founder of Nouveau Réalisme: transforming everyday manufactured objects into artistic matter, revealing through repetition and accumulation an unexpected visual poetry.
