Jesús Curia

JESÚS CURÍA  is a Spanish contemporary sculptor born in Madrid in 1969. He studied Fine Arts, specializing in sculpture, at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also pursued doctoral studies, before developing a career centered on sculpture and the exploration of the human figure. He has also taught sculpture at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid.

At the heart of his work lies the human body, which he simplifies, stretches, fragments and combines with geometric structures. His figures appear to exist outside any specific time or place: deliberately understated facial features blur distinctions of age, gender and cultural origin, transforming them into almost archetypal human beings. Through this ambiguity, Curiá explores universal themes including identity, solitude, human relationships and the condition of contemporary life.

His sculptural language is also defined by a constant dialogue between tradition and modernity. Influenced by his fascination with ancient cultures, particularly African and Asian artistic traditions, Curiá combines timeless figurative references with clean lines, geometric structures and distinctly contemporary forms. His sculptures therefore seem to belong simultaneously to an ancient past and an imagined future.

Curiá works with a broad range of materials including bronze, steel, iron, marble and wood, frequently combining several within a single sculpture. Bronze nevertheless remains central to his practice. His carefully developed patinas — from deep earthy tones to turquoise and copper hues — enhance the physical presence of his figures and emphasize the contrast between the organic body and the geometric elements surrounding it.

Balance is one of the recurring principles of his work. Suspended bodies, stacked children and figures supported by seemingly fragile structures often appear to challenge gravity. This visual lightness contrasts with the physical density of bronze, producing a poetic tension between weight and weightlessness, stability and movement, strength and vulnerability.

His characteristic column sculptures illustrate this research particularly well. Human figures are assembled vertically into contemporary totem-like structures, with each body contributing to the equilibrium of the whole. In other works, Curiá confronts the softness of the human form with rigid blocks, metal planes or architectural geometries.

Behind the apparent simplicity of these sculptures lies a precise study of anatomy, gesture and movement. Curiá continually reduces the figure to its essential forms, preserving enough realism in the body's posture to intensify its emotional and symbolic presence.

Over several decades, Jesús Curiá has exhibited internationally across Europe, the United States and Asia, including presentations in Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Milan, Cologne, Chicago, New York, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. His practice remains active today, with several new sculptures dated 2025 presented at Art Madrid 2026.
