Racing is a wall sculpture by Israeli artist
David Gerstein, in which a peloton of cyclists racing at full speed becomes a spectacular composition of colour, line and movement.
Made from cut and hand-painted metal, the artwork is composed of several overlapping layers that create a strong sense of depth. The cyclists’ silhouettes intersect, overlap and seem to emerge from the wall, giving this contemporary sculpture a remarkable feeling of speed and dynamism.
Cycling holds an important place in David Gerstein’s artistic universe. Fascinated by athletes in motion, the artist is interested not only in individual effort but also in the energy created by the group. In Racing, the riders form a true peloton: each figure retains its own identity through the colours and patterns of its clothing, while contributing to a powerful collective movement.
The vivid and contrasting palette enhances this impression. Reds, yellows, blues, greens and graphic patterns animate the composition and guide the eye from one figure to another. Despite the stillness of the metal, Gerstein succeeds in suggesting speed, the intensity of competition and the continuous movement of the race. Through Racing, David Gerstein also brings together sport and art, two forms of expression capable of crossing borders and languages. Cycling becomes both a subject and a means of exploring rhythm, repetition, colour and the relationship between the individual and the group.
With its large scale and three-dimensional composition, Racing by David Gerstein has a particularly strong presence within a space. At the crossroads of Pop Art, painting and contemporary wall sculpture, the work perfectly reflects the joyful, energetic and instantly recognisable visual language of the artist.
