Open Head is a wall sculpture by Israeli artist
David Gerstein, created in hand-painted cut steel. In this three-dimensional composition, the profile of a human face becomes the frame for a vibrant universe filled with brightly coloured butterflies.
Layered across several planes, the metal elements create a striking sense of depth. The butterflies appear to move through the face, escape its contours and freely occupy the surrounding space, while the colourful lines defining the head structure the overall composition. Depending on the viewing angle and the light, the different layers also cast their own shadows, further enhancing the impression of movement.
With Open Head, David Gerstein brings together several defining elements of his artistic practice: colour, movement, nature and the transformation of painting into sculpture. The face becomes an open, almost mental space, in which the butterflies can evoke freedom, imagination and thoughts in constant motion.
Made from laser-cut, hand-painted steel, this wall sculpture perfectly illustrates David Gerstein’s distinctive artistic language at the crossroads of Pop Art, painting and contemporary sculpture. The three metal layers give the work genuine relief, allowing colour to extend beyond the traditional surface of a painting.
Graphic, luminous and instantly recognisable, Open Head by David Gerstein brings a dynamic presence to any interior while retaining the lightness, energy and playful spirit that characterise the artist’s work.
