Pierre Farel

Pierre Farel

Biography

PIERRE FAREIL is a French contemporary painter born in Orange, Southern France, in 1957. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, he moved to Corsica in 1977 at the age of twenty. The island soon became much more than a place to live: deeply connected to his Corsican maternal roots, Farel developed a distinctive artistic universe inspired by Mediterranean light, landscapes, encounters and a particular sense of lifestyle. He now lives and works in Ajaccio, where his studio and Espace Farel Créations are located.

Since the late 1980s, Pierre Farel has developed an essentially figurative body of work, instantly recognizable through its fluid drawing, elegant silhouettes and scenes filled with movement and sensuality. Women and men, couples, musicians and travelers inhabit his compositions, often appearing in settings inspired by terraces, beaches, harbors, nightlife and major cities.

The female figure occupies a central place in his work, although his artistic universe also draws on music, cinema, rock culture, fashion, the 1970s, travel and Corsica. His characters are frequently portrayed without clearly defined facial features, giving them a universal quality: rather than depicting a specific individual, Farel captures an attitude, an encounter or a suspended moment in time.

Pierre Farel's paintings are closely associated with an aesthetic of escape and the Dolce Vita. Fluid lines, elongated silhouettes, carefully balanced colors and seemingly effortless scenes create an atmosphere combining elegance, travel and carefree sophistication. His works capture not simply a specific destination, but the feeling of a moment one would like to make last.

Farel works primarily with oil on canvas and paper, while his artistic practice also includes lithography, sculpture and limited-edition creations. Throughout his career, he has produced thousands of works and exhibited extensively in France and internationally, including in Paris, London, Beirut, Brussels, Beijing, New York, Shanghai and Miami.

His relationship with Galerie De Medicis also spans more than two decades. Following a meeting in New York in 2001 with Richard El Mir, Pierre Farel joined the gallery's roster of artists and has been regularly exhibited at its Place des Vosges location in Paris since 2002.

Pierre Farel continues to live and work in Ajaccio today. In 2025, Espace Farel presented his latest creations, including paintings, lithographs and numbered editions, demonstrating the continuity of an artistic career now spanning nearly four decades.
