Kurar

KURAR, whose real name is Aurélien Descours, is a French urban artist born in Clermont-Ferrand in 1983. A self-taught artist, he discovered graffiti in the late 1990s and initially developed his practice through three-dimensional lettering and spray paint. Over time, he also experimented with collage before making stencil art one of the defining techniques of his artistic language.

His work is immediately recognizable for its distinctive visual contrast, combining predominantly black, white and grey compositions with vivid or fluorescent accents. These bursts of color are not merely decorative: they draw attention to specific elements within the image and reinforce the symbolic meaning of each composition.

A recurring figure within KURAR's work is the child, used as a symbol of innocence confronted with the contradictions of the adult world. Through this imagery, the artist explores themes including consumer society, war, inequality, religion, environmental concerns and the excesses of contemporary life, approaching serious subjects with a combination of humor, irony and visual impact.

His compositions frequently rely on contrast and unexpected associations. A scene that initially appears playful or familiar often reveals a deeper social commentary. Drawing on the visual language of advertising, popular culture and everyday imagery, KURAR invites viewers to reconsider consumerism, individualism and the values shaping contemporary society.

His practice now extends from public space to studio work and gallery pieces. Through stencil, painting, collage and mural interventions, he continues to develop his visual vocabulary while preserving the dialogue between realistic monochrome imagery and striking bursts of color that has become one of his signatures.

KURAR has exhibited widely in France and internationally, with presentations in cities including Paris, Brussels, Montreal, Shanghai and Miami. Recent solo exhibitions include Horizon in Marseille in 2021, Studies in Montreal in 2022 and Electric Lights in Paris in 2023. His work was also featured at the URBAN NATION Museum in Berlin for its opening in 2017.

Through an artistic practice that is both visually immediate and socially engaged, KURAR transforms the codes of street art into a means of questioning contemporary society, combining innocence, humor and social criticism without imposing a single interpretation on the viewer.
