Joshua Jensen-Nagle

Joshua Jensen-Nagle is a contemporary photographer born in Washington, New Jersey, and based in Toronto, Canada. He developed an early passion for photography before moving to Canada in 1999 to study at the Ryerson University School of Image Arts, now Toronto Metropolitan University, where he began shaping the distinctive visual language that defines his work today.

Best known for his luminous, dreamlike large-scale photographs, Jensen-Nagle is less interested in simply documenting a place than in capturing the feeling associated with it. His images invite viewers into a world suspended between memory and imagination, transforming beaches, coastlines, winter landscapes and European landmarks into reflections on travel, nostalgia and the passage of time.

One of his most recognizable bodies of work, Endless Summer, focuses on beaches photographed from elevated perspectives, often from helicopters. Seen from above, swimmers, sunbathers and umbrellas become fragments of color within compositions that can initially appear almost abstract. From a distance, the photographs resemble paintings; viewed more closely, their individual figures and photographic details gradually emerge.

This dialogue between photography and painting runs throughout Jensen-Nagle’s practice. He has long experimented with a range of analog and photographic processes, including expired Polaroid film, layering and physical interventions on photographic prints. In some works, he alters an image before photographing it again, deliberately blurring the boundaries between different artistic mediums.

His compositions also explore the relationship between the individual and the vastness of the surrounding landscape. In his aerial photographs, human figures are often reduced to tiny silhouettes immersed within their environment. These scenes suggest both connection and solitude: people sharing the same space while remaining absorbed in their own private experience.

Over more than two decades, Joshua Jensen-Nagle has mounted over fifty exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs including Photo London, Art Miami, SCOPE Miami and Art Toronto. His work has also been exhibited in institutions including the Glenbow Museum and the Griffin Museum and is held in numerous private and corporate collections worldwide.

His relationship with Galerie De Medicis forms part of this international career, with a solo exhibition presented at the gallery in Paris in 2016.
