Jonty Hurwitz

JONTY HURWITZ  is a contemporary artist and sculptor internationally recognized for his work at the intersection of art, mathematics and science. Based in London, he has developed a distinctive practice exploring human perception through anamorphosis, mirrors, algorithms and advanced digital technologies.

He is particularly renowned for his anamorphic sculptures. At first glance, these works appear distorted, stretched or almost abstract. Yet when reflected in a polished cylindrical mirror placed at the center of the composition, a perfectly recognizable image emerges. The sculpture only fully reveals itself when the viewer finds the correct perspective.

To create these works, Hurwitz combines traditional sculpture, three-dimensional modelling, mathematical calculation and digital technology. Each distorted form is constructed according to precise geometric principles so that its reflection produces a coherent image. Technology therefore becomes much more than a production tool: it serves as a means of questioning how the human mind interprets reality.

Anamorphosis has a long history within Western art, with examples associated with artists including Leonardo da Vinci and Hans Holbein. Hurwitz extends this historical tradition into contemporary sculpture, using twenty-first-century technology to reinterpret centuries-old investigations into perspective and optical illusion.

At the heart of his practice lies a constant tension between what we see and what actually exists. A sculpture may appear chaotic from one angle and immediately familiar from another. The viewer therefore becomes an active participant in the work, moving around it and discovering that perception itself can be unstable.

Hurwitz is also known for his pioneering experiments in nano-sculpture, pushing the relationship between artistic creation and technology to an almost invisible scale. His wider practice now includes anamorphic sculpture, monumental installations and digital works, while maintaining the same fascination with geometry, perception and the boundary between physical and virtual realities.

His work continues to be exhibited internationally. A major solo exhibition was presented at the Museo Internacional del Barroco in Puebla, Mexico, in 2023. In 2025, his work was also featured at Science Museum Oklahoma, followed by his first London solo exhibition, Out of the Unseen, and a presentation at CONTEXT Art Miami.
