Felix Semper

Felix Semper

Biography

Felix Semper is a Cuban-American contemporary artist born in Havana, internationally recognised for his distinctive stretchable paper sculptures that challenge traditional ideas of sculpture. His signature technique consists of stacking, gluing, cutting and carving thousands of sheets of paper to create works that initially appear solid, yet can be stretched, unfolded and transformed.

Through this innovative process, Felix Semper blurs the boundaries between sculpture, movement and visual illusion. His works often take the form of portraits, everyday objects and symbols drawn from popular culture. Rather than remaining static, his sculptures become flexible and interactive, introducing an element of performance into the viewing experience.

Pop culture plays an important role in Semper’s artistic universe. He has created sculptures inspired by figures such as The Notorious B.I.G. and A$AP Rocky, alongside iconic objects associated with contemporary consumer culture. Through these subjects, his work explores themes including identity, transformation, celebrity and the circulation of images in contemporary society.

Alongside sculpture, Felix Semper also works with painting and mixed media, although his paper sculptures remain central to his artistic identity. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum for Papirkunst in Denmark, where his sculptures were featured in the exhibition Paper Art People.

Through his innovative use of paper, Felix Semper offers a contemporary vision of sculpture in which material, movement and interaction become essential elements. His works invite viewers to reconsider the very nature of sculpture while maintaining a playful and immediately engaging quality.
