David David

DAVID DAVID  is a French contemporary artist born in Nancy in 1981. A self-taught sculptor and painter, he now lives and works in Cannes, in the south of France. Developing his practice outside traditional academic paths, he has created a distinctive artistic language shaped by his observation of contemporary society and its contradictions. At the heart of his artistic universe is Blind, an instantly recognizable figure whose face is concealed beneath a bucket. Appearing throughout both his sculpture and painting, Blind acts as a metaphor for the willful blindness of contemporary society, particularly in relation to consumerism, screens, materialism and superficiality.

Blind does not represent a specific individual. With its face and identity hidden, the figure becomes almost universal, encouraging viewers to project themselves into the work. By removing facial expression, David David shifts attention toward posture, gesture and context, questioning what we choose to see — and what we prefer to ignore.

The artist works across a broad range of materials including bronze, steel, wood, resin and acrylic paint. This diversity allows his work to exist at very different scales, from collectible sculptures and paintings to monumental installations and public commissions. Some works are directly carved from wood, reinforcing the physical relationship between the artist and his material.

Over time, David David has increasingly brought his artistic language into public space. His works have been acquired by the cities of Antibes and Toulouse and exhibited in locations including Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, La Chèvre d’Or in Èze and the Old Course in Mandelieu. His monumental sculpture Result, installed in Toulouse, extends approximately eight meters and continues his reflection on contemporary society on an architectural scale. In 2024, David David also created a contemporary reinterpretation of the historic Wallace fountains in collaboration with GHM, the foundry associated with their production for more than a century. The project creates a dialogue between his contemporary artistic vocabulary and an iconic element of French urban heritage.

More recently, the artist has been developing Plainness, a new cycle characterized by a more stripped-back and raw aesthetic. Volume takes precedence over detail, while posture becomes more important than facial expression, extending his exploration of identity and perception beyond the familiar image of Blind.

Through sculpture, painting and monumental installation, David David combines a visually immediate language with a critical reflection on contemporary life, using recognizable imagery to question our habits, priorities and relationship with the world around us.
